  1. English Language
This is a compulsory subject for all JAMB candidates. English is a general requirement, so no matter your course of study, you must include English in your JAMB combination.
  2. Chemistry
Chemistry is one of the core subjects for Fisheries. It’s essential because understanding the chemical processes in water bodies is crucial for fish farming and aquatic life management.
  3. Biology or Agricultural Science
Biology is highly recommended for students planning to study Fisheries. It will give you the foundational knowledge of living organisms, especially aquatic organisms. However, some universities may accept Agricultural Science as an alternative to Biology.
  4. Any other Science Subject
This can be any science subject like Physics, Mathematics, or Geography. While not compulsory, adding another science subject can strengthen your chances and provide a broader scientific foundation.

Make sure you double-check the subject requirements with your preferred university, as they might have slightly different combinations.

O’Level Requirements for Fisheries

In addition to your JAMB subjects, you’ll need to meet the O’Level requirements for admission into Fisheries programs. Typically, you must have at least five credit passes in your Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE). The required subjects are:

  • English Language – Credit pass
  • Mathematics – Credit pass
  • Biology or Agricultural Science – Credit pass
  • Chemistry – Credit pass
  • Any other Science subject – Credit pass

It’s important to note that your O’Level results should be obtained in no more than two sittings. If you’re still in secondary school, aim to get these subjects right to avoid any setbacks during your application process.

Direct Entry Requirements for Fisheries

If you’re not applying through JAMB but instead want to pursue Direct Entry, you’ll need different qualifications. Direct Entry applicants generally have the option of skipping the UTME, but they must meet certain requirements.

For Fisheries, Direct Entry candidates usually need:

  • Two A-Level passes in subjects like Chemistry, Biology, Agricultural Science, Zoology, Botany, or other related fields.
  • National Diploma (ND) in Fisheries or related courses.
  • National Certificate in Education (NCE) in Agricultural Science or a related field may also be accepted by some institutions.

Keep in mind that Direct Entry options vary from one institution to another, so always check the specific requirements of the university you’re applying to.
